Reading the Tea Leaves – or rather Decision Tree Leaves?
How Data Analytics Helps Us Discover Weak Signals of Change
2000 years before The Flat Earth Society was established, ancient Greek astronomers used the Antikythera mechanism, also known as the first computer, to predict the positions of celestial bodies. While we have better data and computers today, we haven’t really improved our human propensity to make judgement, which is still based on limited data and selective worldviews.
How can we use Big Data Analytics in social science-related fields such as Strategic Foresight and Design Thinking to fight the effects of our cognitive biases? And by busting the academic silos that currently separate the social science folks from the data crunchers, can we also help predictive algorithms become more nuanced and fair? Let’s start the conversation!
About Anne Boysen
Anne Boysen is a professional futurist with an M.S. in Strategic Foresight from the University of Houston and Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics, and extensive training in data mining and predictive modeling from Colorado State and Penn State universities. When she isn’t working with her Vaco team at Google, consulting for her company After the Millennials or having fun with her daughters, she geeks out with machine learning methods and R-scripts to try to grasp human nature and understand how emerging change in their attitudes and behaviors might impact the future.
Anne has been interviewed and referenced in several international news media and has presented her findings on a new generational zeitgeist, Generation Z, at events in several countries on three continents.
