Scala on the Google Cloud and Play 2.5

Scio: Scala on the Google Cloud

Scio (http://github.com/spotify/scio) is a Scala API for Google Cloud Dataflow inspired by Spark and Scalding. It unleashes the power of Google Cloud big data products with a concise and elegant Scala DSL. We’ll discuss the unified batch and streaming model, core API design, and additional features such as type safe BigQuery, HDFS, and REPL. There’ll also be a live coding demo.

Speaker: Neville has been working at Spotify for 5 years now and is a member of the music recommendation team. He also leads the effort of adopting various Scala frameworks and functional programming techniques for data processing.

Play 2.5: More Streams, More Speed, Less State

Come see what's new in Play 2.5! Play is an asynchronous, non-blocking web framework and 2.5 brings a whole raft of goodies with it. Some major points:

• Akka Streams integration, like Iteratees but much easier to understand

• Additions to Java HTTP APIs

• Performance improvement of up to 20%

• Internal upgrading to Netty 4.0 and AsyncHttpClient 2.0

• Method and classes that depend on global state singleton object have been deprecated
