Monthly Video Meetup

Details
The August rendition of SF Video is here, and this month is a doozie. Not one, not two, but three great talks.
π Demuxed X
If you didn't notice, the speakers are up on the shiny, new, interactive website! The actual schedule is coming soon, hopefully by the end of the week. π€ Remember to grab your tickets!
π€ Speakers
π£οΈ Hunter Tinny (Palette) - Video Review for Animators in the Modern Web
Animation professionals have specific needs when it comes to video playback: frame-accurate seeking, seamless looping, annotations and onion-skinning to name a few. I'll be talking about the components I built on top of the HTML5 video player, and some of the challenges of bringing animation review pipelines to the modern web.
π£οΈ Steve Heffernan (Mux) - Custom component-based media players
Media players are often the last thing people try to customize in their applications, either because it's intimidating, the native player seems to be fine as it is, or the video/audio platform doesn't allow much customization. Some of us think that's sad and shouldn't be the case. Video and audio should be fun, and fun to work with.
Media Chrome and Player.style are a few open source projects trying to change that by providing composable player UI components that handle the complex media logic, and a set of professional-grade themes to start from. These themes and components work across media players (Youtube, HTML5 video), and across frameworks (React, Svelte, vanilla HTML). That's possible thanks to web components (with React wrappers), standardized media APIs, and lot of keyboard mashing. I hope you get inspired to upgrade your own player.
π£οΈ Jacob Marshall (Sieve) - Diving into Meta's next-generation video segmentation model (SAM2)
We'll do a deep-dive into SAM2, a new open-source model released by Meta which is world-class at segmenting and tracking anything in videos and images. We'll discuss how it works, show off some cool use cases, and discuss a few performance optimizations that would help you run it efficiently.
IRL Logistics
Our host building has security people downstairs, and they require us to have a list of names downstairs for check-in. Just to make sure we can have everyone printed out, please make sure to RSVP by ~5pm on Thursday.
Mux put together a page on details for getting in and there are specific check-in instructions on the page.
Can't wait to see folks!
