Monthly Video Meetup: August
Details
This was one of those months where, in the past, I've thrown up the Matt Signal and a Matt (or an Alex, Yueshi, or countless other names since 2013) have bailed the group out with a last amazing minute talk. I'll be honest, I was close to cancelling it for the first time, but Dylan and Colleen talked me into talking myself into talking. The Matt Signal shines again, I guess, and it even worked to attract a Dylan.
Thanks to the panicked emailing, we also got talks lined up for the next few months, which is incredible. If you're interested in being one of those esteemed future speakers, shoot me a note.
𝙓 Demuxed
The speakers are (almost) entirely in! We'll be announcing the specifics of the schedule shortly, but the speaker list should be up by the time the meetup is around tomorrow. Heck, it might even be up by the time you see this. We're going to be pretty strict about the in-person ticket limit, so make sure to go grab a ticket!
🎤 Speakers
Dylan Jhaveri (Mux) - "What’s old is new again: the state of web development and building video players for the web"
The web has evolved a lot in the last decade, but now parts of it are starting to feel a little bit like old times. Join me as we talk about the broad trends in web development and what that means for building video players.
Matthew McClure (that's me) - "How I learned to stop overcomplicating things and just edit text files."
Those of us that are deep in the weeds on Video Stuff™ often forget that HLS starts (ends?) with a bunch of text files. Text files are a lot easier to fiddle with than video files. That's pretty fun.
This talk is a deep oversimplification of many things on many levels. Last week was Hack Week at my company, and I spent the week with a colleague hacking together a list of examples of fun things you can do with pure manifest manipulation before ever touching video bits.
IRL Logistics
Our host building has security people downstairs, and they require us to have a list of names downstairs for check-in. Just to make sure we can have everyone printed out, please make sure to RSVP by ~5pm on Thursday.
Mux put together a page on details for getting in, COVID protocols, etc. Everyone needs to be fully vaccinated and there are specific check-in instructions on the page.
Can't wait to see folks!
