Web Performance From First Principles: asking why, instead of should

Should I put X before Y, or should I optimize my CSS? Wrong questions, ask "why" instead! Gaining insights into the underlying mechanics of how a modern web browser works is far more important than memorizing three dozen performance rules. Once you know the why, the should will find an answer by itself.

We'll take a tour of WebKit and Chrome and dive into the internals to answer a few example "why" questions. The goal is to arm you with enough knowledge to let you efficiently explore the source code and answer these questions for yourself.
