An Evening with Michael Frederickson: Awe, Proceduralism, and World Building

Details

Michael Frederickson is a visual artist, musician, and technical director at Pixar Animation Studios. His work focuses on blending procedural and hand crafted techniques to create vast, never before seen worlds. Most recently, Michael was part of a team that won a VES Award for their work building the City of the Dead for Pixar’s Coco. Other film credits include Up, Cars 2, and Inside Out .

After working on Inside Out, Michael became fascinated with an emotion not explicitly described in that film: awe. What is the ineffable emotion of awe, what makes us feel it, what was its evolutionary purpose, and how might it assist filmmakers in telling their stories? This talk will explore these questions, and provide some tips on how to combine procedural and hand crafted approaches to provoke a sense of awe in those visiting the worlds you’re creating.

No recording is allowed at this event.

Stick around after the presentation to meet Michael and other Houdini users.
