This House Supports the Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden
Details
On September 12, Kevin McCarthy, then-Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced the opening of a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. McCarthy said House Republicans have "uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden's conduct.” He listed allegations of "abuse of power, obstruction and corruption" made against Biden by several GOP-led committees who have been investigating the president.
The House Republicans and other proponents of the inquiry claim that there is undisputed evidence that the President’s son, Hunter Biden, and other members of his family, engaged in a wide-ranging scheme of selling influence, or appearance of influence, to foreign entities for millions of dollars during Joe Biden’s term as Vice President and thereafter. The payments came from Ukrainian energy firm Burisma, a Chinese conglomerate, Russian oligarchs and Kazakh and Romanian businessmen. They allege, based on eyewitness testimony of Hunter Biden’s business partners, that Joe Biden was “the brand” being sold, that as Vice President he participated by speakerphone with Hunter and his business associates at least 20 times, and that he also met or dined with Hunter and his foreign associates. The President has repeatedly lied about key facts in these foreign dealings and may have benefitted from this corruption through the $20 million sent to his family as well as more direct possible benefits. It is true, they say, there’s no proof so far that the President cashed checks from foreign sources. But the House has good reason to follow these leads about a President who is asking to remain in office for another four years. Proof of direct financial benefit to President Biden will certainly require subpoenas of bank records of Hunter and, possibly, Joe Biden himself. The Oversight Committee may want to hear sworn testimony from Hunter, who once texted to his daughter “I hope you all can do what I did and pay for everything for this entire family Fro (sic) 30 years. It's really hard. But don't worry unlike Pop I won't make you give me half your salary." Getting the recipients of these subpoenas to comply would be virtually impossible without the added legal and political weight of an impeachment inquiry behind them.
The inquiry is also to investigate the alleged special treatment offered to Hunter Biden by his father’s administration, IRS and DOJ in particular.
The Democrats and other opponents of the impeachment inquiry claim there is no evidence of impeachable conduct and wrongdoing by the President. In particular, they say there is no proof of any direct payments to the President as the result of his son’s business dealing with foreign actors. In a statement responding to McCarthy's announcement, White House spokesman for oversight and investigations Ian Sams blasted the effort as politically motivated.
"House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they've turned up no evidence of wrongdoing. His (McCarthy's) own GOP members have said so. He vowed to hold a vote to open impeachment, now he flip flopped because he doesn't have support. Extreme politics at its worst," Sams wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Moreover, in the first impeachment inquiry hearing by the House Oversight Committee, Republican witnesses unanimously agreed that there wasn't enough evidence to file articles of Impeachment against President Biden.
