A lot has changed since 2012 or, according to the New York Times, the "Year of the MOOC." The premise then was that massive open online courses would make high-quality online education accessible for all—and for free. But many providers now charge a fee. And while these companies once tried to distinguish themselves from traditional higher education, popular providers like Coursera and edX are increasingly partnering with colleges and universities to offer MOOC-based degrees online.

So, where are MOOCs today? How will this industry continue to evolve—and how will universities respond?
