All About D3 with Aysegul Yonet, Ali Almossawi, and Elijah Meeks

Details
We're excited to present a full evening of three great talks on D3 and data visualization!
Talk #1: Introduction to working with D3.js with Aysegul Yonet
D3.js is a powerful JavaScript library for building stunning interactive data visualizations on the web. I will introduce you to the basic concepts to work with D3.js to get started. We will talk about creating basic charts, working with data, interactivity and performance issues you should be aware of.

Aysegul Yonet (@AysegulYonet (https://twitter.com/AysegulYonet)) is CTO of AnnieCannons (http://anniecannons.com/), Inc and a Software Engineer focusing on data visualization and analytics. Aysegul hosts Women Who Code and Girl Develop It JavaScript Meetups in San Francisco.
Talk #2: D3 in Practice with Ali Almossawi
What are the steps that lead up to a visualization created in D3? What are some questions, challenges, uncertainties and assumptions that one has to deal with throughout the process, from data acquisition to final artifact? This talk goes through a real-world problem—that of making sense of organizational structure—and shows how we might tackle it with the help of D3. Along the way, I share some best practices for data design and data presentation and highlight some of the features in D3 that help make it a great tool for complementing existing tools used by engineers and statisticians.

Ali Almossawi (@alialmossawi (https://twitter.com/alialmossawi)) is a data visualization engineer at Mozilla and a former collaborator with the MIT Media Lab. His work has appeared in Scientific American, Wired, Fast Company and most recently in New Challenges for Data Design.
Talk #3: Challenges of Complex Data Visualization in D3 with Elijah Meeks
No one gets into data visualization to make bar charts and pie charts. But when you’re creating more complex data visualization, like circle-packing diagrams or network data visualization, it’s hard to account for the added visual complexity. This talk will review the various layouts available in core D3 and its plugins to highlight their strengths, weaknesses, and difficulty to create or read.
