Cross-Device Tracking Explained

Details

PI&T is excited to announce our upcoming Meetup, 'Cross-Device Tracking Explained: The Technology, Consumer Pros & Cons, and Privacy Approaches to Identifying Users Across Devices and Platforms' with Darren Abernethy, Technology and Data Privacy Attorney.

Join us the evening of Tuesday, January 26th to review and discuss cross-device tracking--the cutting edge confluence of new information-collecting technology, "Big Data" and data broker profiling, and targeted advertising. Although the cookie has not yet quite crumbled, cross-device tracking represents the next step in tracking and reaching consumers by enabling companies and marketers to follow users' online activity not just across web pages within a browser, but across browsers, locations, devices and platforms.

Are you CIPP certified? Then attend this session to earn CPE credits from International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP)!

Our interactive discussion will address:

• How cross-device tracking fits along a continuum that includes cookies and online behavioral advertising;

• The different forms of cross-device tracking, including what the buzzwords "deterministic and probabilistic linking" mean;

• The potential benefits and concerns of the practice, from enterprise and consumer privacy perspectives; and

• Current regulatory and legal approaches, including considerations of transparency/consent, the FTC's past enforcement in related contexts, and self-regulatory possibilities.

Contact: Matthew Coleman, mcoleman@truste.com

Location: TRUSTe HQ: 835 Market Street, Suite 800, San Francisco, CA 94103

How to gain entry into building and office suite:
Enter using the 835 Market Street business lobby entrance (located next to the Westfield mall entrance/Timberland and directly across the street from the Oakley Store). There should be a set of elevators in the back of the lobby. Use an elevator to access the 8th floor. IF you're having difficulties, please call 408.821.8861 so someone can meet you in the lobby and assist.

IMPORTANT: If you are searching for TRUSTe or 835 Market Street on Google maps, you will be taken to the WRONG entrance. We recommend searching for the Timberland store, as it is right next door to the business lobby entrance.

Meet our speaker: Darren Abernethy
Darren Abernethy is a Technology and Data Privacy Attorney currently based in San Francisco, and admitted to practice law in California, New York and Washington D.C. He is an IAPP CIPP/US and CIPM. Darren began his career in private practice for over half a decade at the Washington D.C. office of Mintz Levin, where he specialized in telecommunications regulation and privacy matters. Darren represented cable operators/ISPs, mobile wireless providers and spectrum users before federal regulators and state public utility commissions.

Darren's policy concentrations included geolocation and location-based advertising, legislative proposals relating to law enforcement rights to electronically stored information, online policies, CPNI, "Network Neutrality" and Internet architecture, Smart Grid, effective competition and rate regulation, Truth-in-Billing, FCC licensing and auctions, and the wireless spectrum crunch. He also participated in numerous media mergers, spin-offs, and related transactions, from a federal regulatory approval standpoint.

Leaving our nation's capital to "go west" and insert himself into the left coast's technology and start-up atmosphere, Darren joined the full-service marketing and consulting agency Get Fresh Inc. as a technology consultant and then as Chief Financial Officer, where he worked with a whip-smart team to help hardware tech start-up brands spin-up and achieve rapid sales growth so successfully as an agency that it was acquired by sous vide precision cooker maker Anova Culinary in 2015. Darren's other professional interests include cloud computing issues, encryption and technology contracts.

We hope to see you all on January 26, 2016!
