Talk 1: Caching and HTTP Acceleration with Varnish
(The best traffic is traffic that never hits your servers)

Harlow Ward from Hotel Tonight will be talking about Varnish, an HTTP accelerator, and how to use it effectively within a Rails application. The talk will address how to configure HTTP headers and use cache invalidation as well as touch on writing VCL (Varnish Configuration Language). Harlow will also talk about setting up a free developer account with Fastly (a hosted Varnish service) and provide a look at using Surrogate-Keys for advanced cache invalidation.

Talk 2: Introduction to Docker + Tips on using Docker in Rails Applications

Docker is a new open-source tool that makes it easy to use Linux Containers. Brian Morearty will give a basic introduction to Docker and do a whirlwind walk-through of creating a Docker container with a Dockerfile.

He will also provide a number of Ruby- and Rails-specific tips on how to get the most out of Docker when using it to deploy Rails applications.

Brian Morearty is co-founder of Hands on with Docker (http://handsonwith.com), Docker's only official training partner, as well as a software consultant and an entrepreneur. He was a Staff Software Engineer at Intuit for 12 years, was the Tech Lead for the QuickBooks team, and created and taught classes on Ruby on Rails, Flex, and more.

Despite his name, he is not Sherlock Holmes’ evil arch-enemy. He is a frequent contributor to the #docker IRC channel and the docker-user mailing list, helping people with questions on all things Docker.

Tech Talk

Quinn Slack and Yin Wang from Sourcegraph will show off a tool for finding Rails (and Ruby) documentation and usage examples, and demonstrate how you can use it to stay on top of new Rails features and best practices
