Talk 1: Metaprogramming: the Bounty of Ruby

The topic will be metaprogramming, with a discussion of some common techniques and examples of how we've used them to DRY up our code. Most of these examples will be taken from gems we've released.

About the Speaker:

Tony Novak is the CTO of Amitree, an Accel-backed San Francisco startup that helps homebuyers navigate the complex world of real estate. He focuses on using technology to eliminate obstacles and make life easier for both consumers and developers. Before joining Amitree, he was a Stanford PhD dropout, director of R&D at Dapper, and an architect at Yahoo working on personalization for advertising and content.

Lightning Talk: It's All About the People

Developers are often focused on writing great, clean code, but how often do we stop to think about the people we’re making software for? As engineers we need to care more about people and the experience our products provide them. This short talk serves as a reminder of why we do what we do: to improve the lives of other humans.

Fab Mackojc has spent the past few years working for early to medium-stage tech companies in a variety of different roles. Originally from Australia, he moved to the Bay Area last year to work as a web developer. In his spare time he enjoys travelling and also reading about design, psychology and human behaviour.

Talk 2: RAML: The Open Source RESTful API Modeling Language

RESTful API Modeling Language (RAML) is a simple and succinct way of describing practically-RESTful APIs. It encourages reuse, enables discovery and pattern-sharing, and aims for merit-based emergence of best practices. In this session we’ll take a look at writing and using RAML to design and prototype APIs, as well as utilize the power of RAML, Ruby, and open source to provide up to date, easy to read API documentation.
