A cinematic ode to a group of young radicals striving to defend Finland’s forests against the vested interests of the forestry industry and the political system, demonstrating that the outcome of this Once Upon a Time story – happily ever after or ecological disaster – rests largely on the shoulders of young activists like Minka, Ida and their comrades.
Awards: Nominee - DOX:Award (2024 CPH:DOX), Nominee - Best Documentary (2024 Chicago International Film Festival)
Programmer's Note: Have you ever read news about young activists throwing paint at famous museum paintings or blocking traffic to protest against oil companies destroying the environment? This film is about these kinds of youths, but in Finland where this genteel and quietly reflective documentary is set, activism and reactions by authorities feel 'kinder'. As led by the tireless 22yo Ida, the Forest Movement seeks to protect the beautiful boreal forests that are critical for ecological sustainability. The film doesn't push for polemical discourse but encourages us to be compassionate to activists—and as activists—in active modes of disruption. (Eternality Tan, Vice-Chair & Programming Director)
