ABSTRACT:
Guidance is plentiful on learning how to write software but where do we seek guidance on how to maintain software for the long-term? Which best practices help ensure software is governed well, has efficient built/test/deploy infrastructure, and is communicated clearly to its stakeholders?
Imagine if there were a collaborative, community-maintained space to share things like starter templates to get your open source project up and running. A space for sharing good documentation strategies, including tools and hosting services. A place for recommending reference architectures for continuous testing and security scans.
If topics like these, and others, are important to you, come hear Rishi Verma, a data architect and systems engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, talk about about Software Lifecycle Improvement & Modernization (SLIM). SLIM is an open-source effort focused on collecting, developing, and disseminating best practices and process improvement strategies in NASA multi-mission software development lifecycle ecosystems, but with broad applications to wider software project efforts.
SLIM represents both a community of contributors as well as a continually evolving open source repository for best practices documentation including: software lifecycle use cases, starter kits, reference architectures, and tool trade studies.
This presentation will introduce SLIM, what we’ve worked on, what we plan to work on, as well as share tips on how to use recommendations from SLIM in your own projects and how to contribute best practices back to this community.
SPEAKER:
Rishi has well over a decade’s worth of experience at one of the world’s premier scientific and technological institutions – NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He is an expert in the architecture and design of mission-critical, high-availability science data systems, computing architectures for Big Data and real-time streaming data systems. Additionally, he’s passionate about community-driven software development, software lifecycle efficiency improvements, and open sourcing publicly-funded projects. Rishi has worked in many diverse domains, including: deep space communications, climate science, water resource management, planetary surface imaging, the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, national defense, national cyber-infrastructure, and human-trafficking mitigation, to name a few. In addition to his role at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Rishi is also a U.S. Department of State Fulbright Specialist, a performing musician, and an artist specializing in traditional arts. SGVLUG is one of the oldest and most active Linux User Groups in the Greater Los Angeles area. In addition to Linux, the group also shares interests in other free and open source software, all forms of technology, and the discussion of issues that arise with the these new tools, such as privacy rights. SGVLUG attracts members from throughout LA County including Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, and eastward throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Our members include software developers, system administrators, hardware engineers, and software users of all levels of experience. Many work in the technology field as employees, contractors or consultants, and enjoy the learning and networking opportunities available from the group. We also have many members that serve as volunteers of their time and skills at various local events, including the annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE).
