There is a possible ice cream stop here at the old station before our adventure begins. We leave the wide old railway and drop to the river. Technically the day after the longest day, but this way we won’t upset anyone celebrating the solstice at the stone circle! A lovely evening walk from Monyash, down through the top end of Lathkill Dale, then up and out near Cales Dale where we’ll make our way over the fields to Arbor Low stone circle and stop for a picnic tea. After our picnic and wander (maybe a ritual sacrifice or something) we’ll head the easy way back into Monyash and probably go to a pub.Bring food for a picnic and a £1 coin – the stone circle is looked after by English Heritage on the grounds that visitors pay a small contribution to the landowner.

Start point: Bolton-on-Dearne station, S63 8NY
End point (if not circular): Circular
Distance (in miles): 9
Ascent (in meters): 70
Full description:
A walk in an area the group doesn't often visit, linking together the perimeter of a number of RSPB nature reserves in the Dearne valley. We start from Bolton on Dearne station and head to the village of Harlington on the Trans Pennine Trail. We then head through the Adwick Wash nature reserve, through Barnburgh woodland and then alongside the lake at Manvers. Our walk then takes us around the perimeter of the Old Moor nature reserve (calling in at the cafe if possible), which offers a decent view out over the marshland and lake. We then head back to Bolton Station on the Trans Pennine Trail.
This is a fairly flat walk, mostly on good quality paths but please come prepared for patches of mud etc. in places dependent on the weather. We will go at a fairly gentle pace and take a break for lunch and then again at the Old Moor cafe. We won't actually enter the Old Moor nature reserve so no admission charges (but a good view of them all the same).
Public transport or car sharing options:
Train to Bolton on Dearne. The 10:15 from Sheffield arrives at 10:43 (the Leeds stopping service).Car parking: either on street in Bolton on Dearne or use the station car park (you may need to buy a low value train ticket as is for rail users only).
