Wharncliffe Woods, Wharncliffe Crags

Meet at: Roadside parking outside the Lowood Club, Station Road, Deepcar S36 2SQ. As an environmentally conscious group, we actively encourage car sharing. Further details of car sharing arrangements from Sheffield, Manchester and elsewhere will appear in the comments section nearer the time.

Just like the many crags, we've all had the pleasure of exploring over the many fun years we've had and will keep having, there are, as we all know, great climbing routes here, some of us have seen and picked out some more routes I never really knew of, because I only came across them in the last 12-18 months or so, including a really good and pleasant 'overhang workout!', something I haven't personally tried or done in door in a long time, credit to those who have done it and those who've tried!

Wharncliffe crags are definitely one of the group's favourite climbing and hiking places to be. It's very special in it's own right, as there's significant history as well.

There is something at Wharncliffe for everybody, however we would need to and WILL venture across the entire set of crags, which is very doable and very fun to do in the time we have once we hike up to the crags. If you don't wish to scramble along the bottom to get to a crag of our choice, you can pleasantly hike along the top with ease and can easily be met at the same area, as the hiking path is within close proximity to the crag edge.

Our day will begin with meeting at the Lowood Club as stated by the map, on Station Road S36 2SQ. From here we will take a pleasant and interesting hike up and through the woods, through or around two tunnels which are most likely wet and muddy, so you may want to venture around them. We'll then carry on the hike past a nice pond, taking the immediate right path, up through the gate, which takes us along the crag's hiking path. As mentioned above, some of us may want to carrying on hiking the path until having reached a desired crag, others will want to start scrambling from this point along the bottom and meet at that desired crag, and we can easily discuss this when we get there.

After our day's climbing, we'll simply take the same hiking trail back the way we came up, back down to the meeting point.

Please bring any ropes and gear you have, if you don't have anything, don't worry, there is always people who come along, that have a rope and gear.

What you MUST bring along though are your CLIMBING SHOES, HARNESS AND BELAY DEVICE.

As always, if everybody wants to contribute £2.00 towards our Meet Up site fees and other operating costs that will be great, thanks.
