Manitou Hike- Anthony's Nose and Camp Smith trail

Details

Anthony’s Nose and Camp Smith Trail. Moderate difficulty. About 8 miles in total.
Beautiful views. Wear hiking boots.
The walk from the train stop to the Appalachian Trail is 1.4 miles, a road walk with gradual elevation. Then into the woods to Anthony’s Nose is nearly 2 miles. Anthony’s Nose viewpoint of Bear Mountain, the Bear Mountain Bridge and the Hudson River is spectacular. Then we pick-up the Camp Smith trail, which is quite hilly and strenuous, and we will be rewarded with numerous wonderful vistas. We will take the Camp Smith trail for .6 miles and return to the start.

Take the 8:55 AM train (an off-peak train) on the Hudson Line out of Grand Central to arrive in Manitou at 10:05 AM. We will meet at the gate at 8:35 AM. Off-peak fare for adults one-way is $15.25. Senior fare one-way is $10.25. Seniors can pay on board the train without an additional charge.
Only one door on the entire train lets people on and off in Manitou. Generally, you have to be in the last or second to last car and the door between those cars is the one that opens. If you are not with the group, please ask the conductor which car will open at Manitou. Please use the restrooms on the train.
From the Manitou station, we will walk to the trailhead, along a road with a gradual elevation of 500 feet.
We expect to all be at the trailhead gate no later than 10:45 AM.

If you drive, you can park at the Manitou Point Preserve (90 Mystery Point Rd, Garrison, NY 10524) which has public parking and is 0.4 miles north on 9D from the intersection at Manitou Station Road. It is on the left (with not great signage). Irv will meet you there before 9:30 AM and will walk with you south on 9D to South Mountain Pass Road, along which you will meet the train riders.

Please let us know when you sign up if you plan to drive.
If you are unable to attend after signing up, please remove your name from the list so we can know how many to expect.

Barbara will be at Grand Central by the Information Booth until the gate is posted. Irv will meet the drivers in Manitou.

BRING: Water, snack, lunch. Please make sure you have a snack that you can eat while you are walking. Poles are helpful.

Rain cancels. Monday, May 26th will be the rain date.
We will post a comment regarding the weather the evening before.

For those returning to Grand Central Station, there are trains leaving Manitou at 3:29 PM and 4:29 PM (arriving at 4:53 and 5:47 respectively).
On the day of the hike, please use phone or text message to contact either of us, if needed.
Leaders: Barbara Lanzara (917) 623-2589, Irv Reich (917) 913-2742.
