🌹 Wake Up and Smell the Roses ⏰ Hudson River Park Piers 🌹 8 miles

Details

In early June, when the air is still, all of Hudson River Park can smell of roses. This walk is the reverse of Take a Long Walk off a Short Pier, with a few adjustments because flowers.

We'll start at Chambers Street and visit 18 of the Hudson River Park's public piers to enjoy the plants and birds, lawns and gardens, beach and salt marsh, and gorgeous views.

Highlights:

  • Pier 26, a 2.5-acre ecologically themed pier in Tribeca, with giant sturgeon in its fish-themed playground
  • Gansevoort Peninsula (beach and FDNY Marine One Fireboat) and Little Island
  • Lunch break on Pier 57's gorgeous rooftop (BYO or purchase at Market 57 food hall)
  • Intrepid Pier 86 (bags will be examined and you must pass through a metal detector).

Meeting time/place: Monday, June 10, 9:45 a.m. at West Broadway and Chambers Street (Bogardus Plaza) under the clock. Chambers Street 1/2/3 is adjacent [Note: There's a newly discovered restroom in the station]. One block away there's the A/C/E (northernmost exit); R/W and 1/2/3 City Hall stations are three and four blocks respectively. There’s a Starbucks and Zucker’s Bagels at our meeting place.

Course: We'll enter the park at Chambers Street via the bridge at Stuyvesant High School (if elevator available). Our first restroom stop is one block north. In Tribeca we'll visit Piers 25, 26, and 34, and pass massive Pier 40 at Houston Street. In Greenwich Village we'll walk Piers 45, 46, and 51, Gansevoort Peninsula, and view the late-spring plantings at Little Island.

After our lunch break at Pier 57, it's on to Chelsea Piers 59, 60, and 61; Pier 62 (Chelsea Entry Garden); Pier 63 (Chelsea Lawn Bowl); Pier 64 (Stonefield landscape sculpture and native garden); Pier 66, Chelsea Habitat, an ecological planting zone and certified Monarch Waystation; and Midtown Piers 76, 84, and 86 (Intrepid), where we'll get free pier-only passes, and where the walk will end.

Return/Early Exit: Many exit points along 12th Avenue, including crosstown bus stops at 23rd Street (M23) and 43rd Street (M42 and M50), connecting to all subways, plus No. 7 at Hudson Yards.

In case of steady rain, we will postpone the walk.

Bring: Water, sunscreen, hat, lunch/snacks – and you can also buy food/bev at the Market 57 food hall at Pier 57, our lunch stop.

Restrooms: The first restroom stop will be 20 minutes into the walk, and restrooms are plentiful in Hudson River Park.

Guests: Guests are permitted on this walk, but in order o participate, all guests must sign our waiver and release via this link.

Hike leaders: Christine Summerson, 646-491-0764, and Maureen Barodin, 718-954-1581 (day of walk only)
