Bayard Cutting Arboretum

Details
Not our usual type of hike....
The pace is slow, with frequent stops to enjoy the magnificent gardens.
Breaks will be quite frequent. There will be plenty of time for photos.
The beautiful Bayard Cutting Arboretum is a place that people keep going back to.
The walk from the train station is approximately 0.4 miles each way. At the Arboretum, we will walk approximately 4 miles. Part of this time will be on gravel or easy dirt paths but there will also be a short time on trails.
Usually we walk to get to a destination, but this time we walk to really appreciate our surroundings.
Train travelers will meet at the Moynihan station (on the west side of 8th avenue). Barbara will be at the Moynihan station by the Cha Cha Matcha shop facing the main floor no later than 8:00 AM.
There are machines to purchase rail tickets. There is an LIRR office next to the machines where you can purchase your ticket and speak to someone in person, if you like.
We will take the 8:44 AM Long Island Railroad train (an off-peak train) towards Babylon. At Jamaica, usually just across the platform, is the train towards Patchogue. This is a very short train so we will have to walk towards the front of the platform to even see the train. The Patchogue train will arrive in Great River at 10:06 AM.
Once the platform is posted, (usually no later than 10 minutes before train departure), we will go to the platform.
Irv will meet the drivers in Great River at 10:00.
Off-peak fare for adults one-way is $15.25. Senior fare one-way is $10.25.
There is free parking at the Great River Long Island Railroad station and this is a good place for everyone to meet. The corner to look for is Connetquot Avenue and Hawthorne Avenue.
(On weekends, parking at the Arboretum costs $8.)
Please let us know when you sign up if you plan to drive.
If you are unable to attend after signing up, please remove your name from the list so we can know how many to expect.
BRING: Water, snack, lunch. Please make sure you have a snack that you can eat while you are walking. Poles are not needed.
Sneakers are okay, but don't wear brand new white sneakers in case there is a bit of mud.
Although we did not see any ticks, long pants are advised just in case.
More than light rain cancels.
For those returning to Moynihan Penn Station, there are trains leaving Great River at 2:50 PM and 3:50 PM (arriving at 4:11, and 5:11 pm respectively). There will be a transfer at Babylon, where the connecting train should be just across the platform.
On the day of the hike, please use phone or text message to contact either of us, if needed. If you send a message, please include your first name.
Leaders: Barbara Lanzara (917) 623-2589, Irv Reich (917) 913-2742.
