South Pole on Independence Day

Details

This is a 6-mile hike in the southern part of Staten Island, passing by historical places and walking on the beach. From the train station, we will walk to Conference House and learn what historic event took place there on September 11, 1776. We'll then walk through Mt. Loretto Unique Area, and Mt. Loretto State Forest.

We will take the Staten Island Ferry in lower Manhattan, leaving at 9:00 AM. Please use the bathrooms in the ferry terminal on the Manhattan side.
In the St. George terminal, we will go on the Staten Island Railway (SIR) to Tottenville (the last stop). The train leaves at 9:36 AM. It is a 42 minute ride. Stay towards the back of the train. The fare is the same as the subway, and you can use an OMNY card, a credit card, or whatever you use to get on the subway or bus. If you took the subway to get to the Staten Island Ferry, you can get a free transfer to the SIR using the same card or device that you initially used to get to the ferry.
(If we should miss the 9:36 AM train, the next one is 30 minutes later).

Irv will meet the drivers in Tottenville, at the corner of Utah Street and Main Street. There is street parking available.

Please let us know when you sign up if you plan to drive.
If you are unable to attend after signing up, please remove your name from the list so we can know how many to expect.

BRING: Water, snack, lunch. Please make sure you have a snack that you can eat while you are walking. Poles are not essential, but I brought one walking stick with me when we scouted.
Wear appropriate footwear for both walking on the beach and walking on trails.

More than light rain cancels.

We will end up at a different SIR station than where we started. Those going back to their cars, can ride for free back to Tottenville.
Those going back to the Staten Island Ferry, can ride the train to St. George but have to pay (OMNY, credit card, or other method) when they are exiting the SIR at the ferry terminal.

On the day of the hike, please use phone or text message to contact either of us, if needed. If you send a message, please include your first name.
Leaders: Barbara Lanzara (917) 623-2589, Irv Reich (917) 913-2742.
