Pelham Bay Park, Bronx- The Back Trails

Join us for an approximate 6-mile moderately paced hike through Pelham Bay Park. Leader’s choice of trails with a visit to Hunter Island, and lunch at Orchard Beach. We will hike on a few remote trails. Ticks may be present in the area, especially off trail. As a precaution, I recommend bringing insect repellent and, if wearing long trousers, tucking them into your socks.

Restrooms are available at the beginning of the hike and again at Orchard Beach, where we’ll stop for lunch. Please bring a lunch or snack and plenty of water to stay hydrated—this will be an especially scenic hike! Orchard Beach offers picnic benches and restrooms, making it a comfortable lunch stop. If you have a MetroCard or OMNY card, please bring it—we might catch a bus on the way back. On a hot day, you’ll be glad you did!
Note: The hike will be canceled in the event of wet weather or a heat wave.

Public Transportation Instructions:
Take the IRT number 6 train to Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx — this is the last stop on the line. Please plan to arrive by 9:30 AM and meet at the restrooms inside the park, located in a stone building easily visible and just a short walk from the train station and parking lot.

Important Tips: Check the Sunday subway schedule for the 6 train to ensure arrival by or before 9:30 AM. If you have a choice, arriving earlier is better.
Meeting Details:
Look for me sitting at a picnic table near the restrooms where I’ll be taking attendance. Hike will begin shortly after attendance is taken, around 9:45 AM. Expected duration: approximately 3 to 4 hours (subject to change).

Driving Instructions: For those driving, free parking is available at Pelham Bay Park, near the intersection of Middletown Road and Stadium Avenue. The location can be a bit tricky to find, so I strongly recommend using a GPS or a mobile map app to plot your route in advance. Once parked, walk a short distance to the restrooms inside the park, located in a stone building. Please plan to arrive by 9:30 AM..
