At 8:15 on the morning of August 6, 1945, the United States ignited a nuclear device over the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, Nagasaki was bombed. Both cities were destroyed in seconds.

On this 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japan we cover the sites in Manhattan that played a role in the development of the atomic weapon and how it became code named The Manhattan Project as we remember the over 200,000 lives that were lost.

Meeting: 9:45AM at Elizabeth H. Berger Plaza intersection of Edgar St. and Trinity Place in Manhattan. Take the MTA subway R, W, or 1 to Rector St.
End Time: approximately 3:30 PM.

Bring lunch, water, and snacks on this 8 to 9 mile walk from the Cunard building in lower Manhattan, headquarters for the shipping of uranium ore to Columbia University’s Pupin Hall home to the Cyclotron and also the childhood home of J. Robert Oppenheimer on the Upper West Side.
