Take 7:39 Metro-North Hudson line express train from Grand Central to Croton-on-Harmon arriving at 8:35. Drivers meet the group on the Northbound platform at 8:35am. Please use the restrooms on the train. Please let me know if you are driving. Roundtrip Cost is $15 for Seniors, $30.50 for adults. Please use the restrooms on the train. It will be a while before we find others.
Croton Point Park Naturalist, John Phillips will lead us on a 1.5 hour tour along the Hudson River at low tide, pointing out vistas, flotsam & jetsam, tracks & traces, glacial geology, bird life and more.
This tour involves uneven terrain, some obstacles and wet footing. In the event of high water due to local or upstate rains the hike will re-orient as History & Natural History of Croton Point in the same vicinity. Wear sturdy waterproof shoes. There is a $7.00 charge for the tour.
Croton Point Park houses the oldest oyster shell middens on the North Atlantic Coast uncovered by archeologists confirming that the peninsula was inhabited by Native Americans as early as 7,000 years ago. Croton is in fact named for the Indian sachem, Kenoten, which means "wild wind.” In the 17th century, Indians of the Kitchawank tribe on the Wappinger Confederacy occupied a large fortified village on the high flat at the neck of Croton Point, which they called Navish. This was one of the most ancient and formidable Indian fortresses south of the Hudson Highlands. Continue reading about this park's history...
Once our tour is over we'll explore the park, have lunch at a sheltered picnic area and return to the train station.
