RED HOOK - Past and Present- Decline and Rebirth

Details

This will be a guided tour (with much commentary) which will explore
this colorful and vibrate neighborhood located on a peninsula projecting into the Upper New York Bay, surrounded by water on three sides and isolated (cut off) from the rest of Brooklyn by a complex of highways and a major tunnel. From the 1830's to the late 1950's this working class, waterfront community was the East Coast's supreme commercial port. My main emphasis will be on the economic and social history of this section of Brooklyn, and of the various ethnic groups that comprised the past and make up the present Red Hook.

The walk will take about 3 1/2 hours and cover about 5 miles. Between commentary stops we will maintain a moderate pace.

There will be several restrooms stops along the way, and we will take a twenty-minute snack break (Key Lime Pie) halfway through the event.

The event will end at the Smith-9th Street F train subway station.

Heavy rain/snow or other forms of extreme weather will cancel the walk. Please check this site for updates.

Please direct all questions concerning the walk to my email address above. I will endeavor to answer them all.

I will use a voice amplification device to insure better communication between myself and the attendees.
