Hidden Villa Mini Hike
Details
Thursday, May 21, 10:00 am - 12:15 pm
2.4 mi, 240' elevation gain
This is NOT an official Sierra Club hike. There will be a liability form to sign at the trailhead, but basically you're responsible for yourself.
Take a leisurely walk along the Pipeline and Creek Trails of Hidden Villa. We'll have some sun on the hill, with an assortment of wildflowers. The creek is bathed in shade and gurgles contentedly as it heads downstream.
Hidden Villa trails close to the public from June 1 through mid-August, to keep their summer campers safe. If you're thinking of going sometime, consider joining us on this hike.
Poles could be handy on trail sections with tree roots and rocks. Dress for variable weather. Long pants recommended - ticks possible, plus poison oak grows near the trail. Bring water and a snack.
Restrooms near meeting point.
BYO lunch option at picnic tables near the end of the hike. You're welcome to bring a tasty treat to share with the group.
Hidden Villa is steeped in history. Indigenous tribes of the Tamien nation and the Ramaytush Ohlone were the area's earliest known settlers. Later inhabitants used the property in various ways before Frank and Josephine Duveneck purchased it in 1923. They were ahead of their time as they promoted social justice and environmental education on their farm. Among other things, Frank gradually bought the hills above the farm in order to protect the Adobe Creek watershed, where we will be walking.
In 1933 the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club was formed at the Duvenecks' home. A plaque commemorating the founding was dedicated in 1972. We will go to that spot and connect with our history.
Directions: From Hwy 280 take Exit 16 and the Foothill College/Moody Rd/El Monte W ramp. Just beyond the college, the street name changes - stay on Moody Rd. for 1.7 miles. Turn L into Hidden Villa, just beyond some farm fields. At the entrance pay $10 for parking with cash or check. We'll meet at the kiosk just beyond the large dirt parking area. Carpools recommended.
