What we’re about
PLEASE NOTE - MEETUP IS NOT A WAY TO SIGN UP FOR OUR SESSIONS. Please visit our website to sign up for each session. Meet Up is a means for promotion only.
About us:
Since Silverfit's founding in 2013 by Eddie Brocklesby who is now in her 80s. She was the UK’s oldest female Ironman triathlete until 2022. We have grown to over 2,000 members at 17 venues across 9 boroughs reaching a large number of people who weren't previously active. Each venue offers a choice of activities from Nordic Walking, to Pilates, Yoga, Walking Football, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Badminton, gym/ fitness classes, indoor rowing, Bollywood dance, which means that everyone should be able to find an activity to enjoy, regardless of ability or experience.
By promoting happier, healthier ageing through affordable physical activity and at the same time combating social isolation we aim to improve older people's quality of life and also to save the NHS and social care providers money. Members tell us their increased fitness means they attend GP’s surgeries less, or are on reduced medication. Our remarkably high retention reflects that the social element is as highly valued, if not more so, than the physical activity. Benefits of Nordic Walking:
The fitness and health benefits of Nordic Walking are significantly greater than regular walking, trekking or even jogging, with scientific research from Europe and the USA proving that Nordic Walking:
Activates 90% of the body's muscles
Burns up to 46% more calories than regular walking
Increases aerobic effect by up to 25% compared to regular walking
Decreases load and strain on the lower body
Tones upper arms, shoulders and back muscles
Improves lateral mobility of the spine
Develops core stability and strength
Promotes an upright posture
These benefits are achieved through the use of specially designed poles and a properly learned and performed Nordic Walking technique, whereby the poles are used as a resistance tool to engage the upper body. The result is a low impact, high results, total body exercise. As a low impact walking exercise, Nordic Walking is something that can be done and enjoyed individually or as a group activity, anywhere a person can normally walk.

Advice from instructors
During inclement weather it may be useful to think about wearing layers of clothing, that you can take on & off if the weather changes during the walk (e.g. a light waterproof jacket when it rains).
Also please bring water in warmer weather, and wear walking shoes or boots suitable for wet and uneven terrain.
