The JVM’s Secret Bottleneck & The Next Wave in Spring AI and MCP

Title: The JVM’s Secret Bottleneck by Sanne Grinovero (Lead of the opensource Hibernate project!)
This presentation will delve into a serious JVM performance issue that has impacted the Java ecosystem for decades, the methodology leading to its discovery, how it affects the whole Java ecosystem, and how it was finally fixed.

This scalability bottleneck has existed in all JVMs since they were created; the most surprising aspect is how such a very impactful problem has gone undetected for decades, eluding all existing tooling, while many common Java idioms will trigger the issue. Chances are high that your code is affected as well, and understanding this issue could dramatically improve your code's performance.

After explaining the issue, we’ll show some real-world code from popular OSS libraries, how we initially worked around the problem in several popular OSS Java libraries with the goal to demonstrate its severity, and how it was eventually fixed in OpenJDK.

About Speaker: Sanne Grinovero is a Java Champion with 20 years of experience, working as Senior Principal Software Engineer at Red Hat. He is best known as the technical lead for the Hibernate projects, but has been a prolific contributor to a wide range of OSS projects. Sanne is one of the founding members of the Quarkus project, pioneering innovations that enhance application startup time, reduce memory consumption, and enable native image compilation across a number of popular libraries. He is deeply passionate about designing efficient applications on the JVM.
He lived in Holland, Italy, the Caribbean Islands, Chile, Portugal and currently lives in London, UK.
