The genre of Science Fiction in literature and media deals with possible realities and the challenges that humankind might face. By applying real design methods to those imaginary challenges, we can think beyond our familiar, immediate needs and develop new and boundary-pushing ideas for the future. In this workshop, participants will be given prompts to invent solutions for potential design problems in the near, mid, or far distant future.
Join us in ideating possible futures: we will split you into groups based on your selected prompt of choice, from one of the six below.
1. LIVING AND AGEING WELL
The average human lifespan is increasing due to better health care and hygiene, healthier lifestyles, diet, and improved medical care. What innovations will address physical and mental health in the healthcare sector? What about geriatric care?
2. URBAN POPULATION CONTROL
As more people move to cities and land and resources become limited, what will housing look like in the future?
3. RISING SEA LEVELS
Due to the rising sea levels, what if Singapore is completely submerged in the far far future? How would public transportation change, what would it look like?
4. EXTREME WEATHER
The Earth is set to face extreme climate changes. What if Singapore is 55 degrees a day - how would our lifestyles change, and what would our daily products look like?
5. FOOD
With concerns around food waste as well as value chains (dependency on other nations) - are we moving towards self sustainable nations? How will technology change nutrition and food economy?
6. LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS
In a world where privacy and psychological safety is a growing concern, what would dating look like in the future?
No design prerequisites are required for this workshop and participants are welcome from all levels and backgrounds. Come prepared with a writing utensil and ready to use your deep imagination to conjure ideas about the world to come.
