Are PMs holding tight to archaic know-how embarking on their own Death March?

Details
Once, a PM's role was to create immutable project management plans, their respective schedules and other project artifacts. These were created at the very onset in a big-bang approach at the beginning. We have an a name for it: BRUF. The project manager's role is to ensure that the universe follows the plan.
And then epiphany befell onto the PM. He realized that he was no god. His power was limited compare with the one that the universe could conjured. He realized that he needed to go along with the flow and not against it to have a better chance of success with his projects. However, it was easier said than done as the systems were already cast in stone to recognize only the traditional project management ways - even though those believing in the archaic myth were heading towards the cliff.
As a PM in the current tumultuous world with stakeholders still mired in extreme ignorance and biases, how can a PM save his team members and he himself from suffering the tragic fate in their zombic march towards their project's certained death?
