The Junto — Ideas, Insight & Self-Discovery

Inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s Junto Club, founded in 1727 as a gathering for mutual improvement, thoughtful debate and the exchange of knowledge, this group brings that spirit into the modern world.

This is a community for curious, open-minded people who enjoy going beyond small talk — exploring ideas, challenging assumptions, learning from different perspectives and understanding ourselves a little better along the way.

You don’t need to be an expert, academic or “intellectual.” You just need to be curious, willing to listen, and comfortable exploring ideas you may not agree with.

💭 What do we talk about?

Almost anything worth thinking about.

We might explore:

Psychology, philosophy and human behaviour
Science, technology, economics and business
Society, culture and current issues
Decision-making, rationality and critical thinking
Relationships, happiness, meaning and personal values
Self-awareness, identity and personal growth
Interesting ideas from books, podcasts, experiences or our professions
Questions where there may be no single correct answer

The goal isn't to prove who is right. It's to cross-pollinate ideas.

Over time, we hope to become better generalists — people who can connect ideas across disciplines rather than staying inside our own bubbles.

🧠 What are the meetups like?

Think small, thoughtful gatherings rather than lectures or networking events.

Events may include café discussions, quiet dinners, discussion walks, themed conversations, question nights, book or idea discussions, and occasional activities that help us get to know one another beyond conversation.

🌱 The culture we're trying to build

Curiosity over certainty.
Come wanting to understand, not just to convince.

Depth over small talk.
It's okay to discuss ideas, experiences and questions that actually matter to you.

Different perspectives are welcome.
Disagreement can be valuable when it's thoughtful and respectful.

Listen as much as you speak.
Good conversations depend on curious listeners, not just interesting speakers.

Psychological safety matters.
People should feel comfortable expressing an unfinished thought, changing their mind, admitting they don't know something, or sharing an unconventional perspective without being ridiculed.

Leave a little wiser than you arrived.

If you're intellectually curious, enjoy thought-provoking conversations and self-reflection, want to meet people from different walks of life, and like the idea of exchanging perspectives in cafés, quiet spaces and walks around the city — you'll probably fit right in.
