Geology Hike #2, Rosendale Cement Mines!!!
Our dear friend Charles has a wonderful adventure planned for us!! Here for your history lesson for July is our Geology Hike #2. The Rosendale area of New York was a legendary resource for natural cement which was mined from two thin but laterally persistent layers of dolomite that were deposited and interlayered with typical limestones, a part of the Silurian Rondout Formation (~400 million years old). Mining was accomplished using the traditional "room and pillar" method of mining in which stout columns of the rock were left behind to hold up the roof of the mine in order to safely extract the dolomitic cement rock around the pillars. Giant kilns were set up at the mine sites to roast the dolomite "ore" and then mill the roasted ore to produce a powder which upon simply adding water hardened into durable Rosendale Cement. Used extensively in NYC and elsewhere, a system of roadbeds, canals and trackways were constructed to convey the cement from the mines along roads to barges and then on the Hudson for transport. This month's Geology hike will take us through a number of these cement mines which straddle the rail trail in Rosendale north of Williams Lake. Meet at the Binnewater Kiln Rail Trail parking area in Rosendale on Route 7 (Binnewater Road), about a quarter mile N of NYS Route 213 just west of the trestle. Total hike is about 4 miles and we plan to hike at a moderate pace spending plenty of time in the mines. Be sure to bring boots and water and by tradition we'll most likely celebrate our hike afterwards at some venue in Rosendale or High Falls. $2 Meetup fee. Bad weather cancels. I will post by 7am if any changes. Please send me your cell, I will return with mine. Dogs welcome. Bring water for them too!!! This event is limited to 20 attendees. Sorry, no guests allowed. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. By signing up for or attending this event, you certify that you have read, understand and agree to the terms and conditions of the Orange County Outdoor Singles Liability Waiver (See "Liability Waiver" under the "Pages" tab above).

What we're about

Are you tired of doing things alone? Do you love doing things outdoors? HIKING, walking, biking, snow sports, all sorts of things :-) !! Are you age 50 plus? We are a four-season group focusing on outdoor events in a relaxed setting, a group that is welcoming and warm. Many wonderful friendships have grown over time among our members. Many of our activities are focusing on HIKING right now, but there are other things to have fun with!!!! Be forewarned, you must have a silly side to fully appreciate us....... :-)

Join with like-minded singles looking for fun, friendship, and possibly dating if the chemistry is right. Our main focus is adults having fun together with no dating pressure. If you are looking for a dating site this is not it.

Outdoor adventurers need to be prepared for fun and great company! I'm really looking forward to getting outdoors as much as possible, and have lots of cool outdoor things to do. We will also occasionally enjoy indoor activities (mainly during the winter), dinners, bowling, let's see what else we can do together!!

This group is open to all single people, dating people (see note below), and happy dogs of such people. Activities are for adults only. This group is not for people in committed relationships or married people. If you meet someone in the group that is different.

For those in dating relationships, one aspect of our group is to be a safe haven for people who are surrounded by a world that sometimes seems to be Couples Only, please don't bring a date.

IMPORTANT: New people: Your RSVP is very important to me. If you cannot make an event that you have signed up for, PLEASE change your RSVP. If you accumulate no-shows I will remove you from the group. Sorry, if you sign up please show up. :-)

All events are at your own risk. Please read the Liability Waiver on the Pages tab. Please bring your sense of adventure to participate. NO GRUMPY PEOPLE!!! Most events carry a $2 Meetup fee. Please send me your cell number, I'll return with mine. For friends with kayaks, check out my other group, Newburgh Area Kayakers. :-)
