Please join me for a figure eight hike around Sawnee Mountain Preserve along the Ridgeline, Mountainside, and Hilltop Trails. We will meet adjacent to the restroom building by the playground at the beginning of the Ridgeline trail in the 2505 Bettis-Tribble Gap Road parking lot. Please note that this is not the parking lot at the Visitors Center or the Indian Seats parking lot. We will proceed up the Hilltop trail then make a clockwise loop of the Mountainside trail and finish with the Ridgeline Trail. We will average 2.25 mph overall with a moving average pace of 2.5 with a few stops for a drink of water along the way. The trail will vary from gravel path to a well-worn forest path, rocks and branches.

From Atlanta head North on US-19/ GA- 400 to Pilgrim Mill Road (Exit 16). Turn Left, cross over the freeway then turn Right onto Antioch Road at the Citgo gas station. Proceed for 1.4 miles and at the dead end, turn left onto Dahlonega Hwy (GA-306W/GA-9 S). Proceed 0.7 miles then turn Right onto Dr. Dunn Road / Dunn Road. After 0.6 miles, turn Right onto Bettis-Tribble Gap Road. The parking lot will be reached in 0.6 miles on the Left (South). The parking lot on the Right (North) is for the Indian Seats Trails, not for this event.

This is a beginner/intermediate hike. A couple of baby hills and a few steps but otherwise flat along the Chattahoochee River but I'd like to go at a moderate pace between 2.5 - 3.0 mph. It is not a run. 5.1 miles. You can find a copy of the trail map here:

We'll start with the little loop to see the old Jones Bridge and then walk along the water, loop back around the field and retrace our steps to get back to the car.

We'll meet in the parking lot at the very end of the entrance road. Restrooms are open/ Please remove all valuables visible in your vehicles because there have been acts of vandalism. There are 2 entrances to Jones Bridge coming from Holcomb Bridge. The first is the environmental center....don't turn here. Go to the next one. Go all the way to the end.

If you don't have an annual pass I suggest buying one on line. At Jones Bridge and all CRNRA parks there are no longer any envelopes and or normal credit card registration. You have to scan the bar code and enter your license plate, etc. etc. It doesn't work on all browsers so you may be doing a little downloading. Come early and be prepared or you won't be able start on time.

This is a beginner/moderate morning hike at Sope Creek. We will explore some of the sites (ruins, cemetery)... This hike is suitable for beginners that can walk 5 miles. Terrain is mostly flat but expect 2.5 miles per hour. We will meet at Sope Creek Elementary School (free parking) as parking at Sope Creek is very limited. So I have added additional time for this.

Join me on this hike at the Sope Creek section of Cochran Shoals where we will hike about 5+ miles. There are some nice and well-marked trails in this unit and during our hike one of the trails might lead us to the mill ruins. Hiking along the periphery of the unit treats us to views of the river and also the mill ruins on the opposite side which should be visible now.

Most of the hike is along flatter trails, but we might encounter a hill or two (or maybe three) to make this a wholesome workout. We will take few breaks along the way.

Prefer NO DOGS or you can walk behind as long as dog lease does not interfere with any hikers.

There are no bathrooms at this facility.
