SLOVENIA VACATION
f you've been on one of our trips the past few years you may have heard me talking about what a greatt trip this was for us in 2014. And when people ask me what is your favorite country, which I get a lot, Slovenia is always in my top 5. Some European countries have lots of beautiful cathedrals, piazzas, palaces - others have beautiful scenery such as our recent Scandinavia trip - and then you have adventure vacations like Costa Rica. Slovenia is the only country in Europe that combines the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Pannonian Plain and the Karst. The changing landscape is constantly surprising, time and again. You can have one eye on the sea, then look in the other direction and be surrounded by high mountains. Heading up into the forests, you can see the green plains below you. From upland meadows your view stretches into river gorges. This proximity of opposites and contrasts is a hallmark of the country. Slovenia has it all and this trip will deliver it. You will be hearing more and more about Slovenia in the near future I'm sure of it. Please check out the links and photos on this webpage and get ready for another wonderful Europe trip with unbelievable scenery, history and adventure tours. I'm very proud of this trip as it is a completely custom itinerary that will take us to the most scenic places in this beautiful country. Our trip will take us from the center of Slovenia to visit the capital of Ljubljana for 3-nights, to Bled in the north to visit the Julian alps for 4-nights then head west along the border of Italy for some adventure tours in Bovec (Soca Valley) and then finally to the coast of Portoroz for 3-nights giving us a nice, fairly complete tour of this amazing country. Ljubljana is a city by the river on which the mythological Argonauts carried the Golden Fleece, a city by a moor where the crannog dwellers once lived, a city with the rich heritage of Roman Emona, a city that was once the capital of the Province of Carniola and the capital of Napoleon’s Illyrian Provinces, a city of Renaissance, Baroque, and especially Art Nouveau facades, a city that boasts the greatest exhibition of the architecture of the master Jože Plečnik—all this is Ljubljana (http://www.slovenia.info/?_ctg_kraji=2611). We will set up optional day trips to some of the attractions in the area around Ljubljana that include Iški Vintgar (http://www.slovenia.info/en/naravne-znamenitosti-jame/I%C5%A1ki-vintgar.htm?naravne_znamenitosti_jame=4316&lng=2), a gorge with picturesque pools that is reached by passing through the unique landscape of the Ljubljansko Barje (http://www.slovenia.info/en/naravne-znamenitosti-jame/Ljubljansko-barje.htm?naravne_znamenitosti_jame=849&lng=2) wetland, a protected regional park. You can also visit the climatic health resort of Rakitna, a plateau with a lake and a marked circular walking trail, Borovnica and Pekel Gorge, with its waterfalls and rapids. Close by is Vrhnika, from where Napoleon's Avenue, lined by ancient lindens, leads to Logatec (http://www.slovenia.info/en/-ctg-kraji/Logatec.htm?_ctg_kraji=3177&lng=2). We are communicating with a very nice tour guide here that is offering us his suggestions on how to spend our time here. More info on Ljubljana. (http://www.slovenia.info/si/Regions/Central%20Slovenia.htm?_ctg_regije=42) From here we head up north to Bled, home of the Julian Alps. Bled is located on a beautiful lake as well as our hotel there. Make sure you bring your best camera on this trip as the scenery here is breathtaking. The area of the Julian Alps is enclosed by two beautiful lakes. The resort town of Bled (http://www.slovenia.info/en/-ctg-kraji/Bled.htm?_ctg_kraji=2517&lng=2), with its legendary island in the middle of the lake and its clifftop castle, its hot springs and its pleasant climate, has been attracting cosmopolitan visitors for centuries. Bathing establishments, hotels with swimming pools, footpaths, tennis courts, golf courses, a casino, the sports airfield in Lesce and nearby sights of natural and cultural interest provide plenty more reasons for a visit. Not far from the lake is Blejski Vintgar, the remarkable natural gorge of the river Radovna. Bohinj, with its unspoilt Alpine lake, is popular with visitors not only for its beautiful natural setting and the ski centres of Vogel (http://www.slovenia.info/en/smucarska-sola/Vogel.htm?smucarska_sola=126&lng=2), Kobla (http://www.slovenia.info/en/smucarska-sola/Smu%C4%8Darski-center-Kobla.htm?smucarska_sola=9&lng=2) and Soriška Planina (http://www.slovenia.info/en/smucarska-sola/Smu%C4%8Darski-center-Sori%C5%A1ka-Planina.htm?smucarska_sola=33&lng=2), but also for its rich local cultural traditions and numerous cultural and religious monuments. Nearby Pokljuka (http://www.slovenia.info/en/hrib-gora/Pokljuka.htm?hrib_gora=2185&lng=2) is a paradise for hikers and mushroom pickers and a venue for important international biathlon competitions. We'll plan on offering a boat tour, a cycling tour, which was a highiight of our last trip, and some hiking. You can also go horseback riding, kayaking and much more. More info on Bled activities (http://www.slovenia.info/en/Regions/Activities.htm?_ctg_regije=21&srch=1&srchtype=predef&searchmode=30&localmode=region&lng=2). Our stay here in Bled will also include dinner. From Bled we head south to the town of Bovec for the day in route to the coastal town of Portoroz.. Known especially as the emerald route and gateway to the Soca river we will have an optional river rafting tour. The wonders of the Goriška region include the beautiful Alpine peaks and valleys of the Triglav National Park (http://www.slovenia.info/en/Triglavski-narodni-park.htm?triglavski_narodni_park=0&lng=2), the enchanting wine winegrowing areas of Goriška Brda and the Vipava Valley, and the hills around Cerkno and Idrija. One of the most distinctive and recognizable sights of the region is the emerald river Soča (http://www.slovenia.info/en/reka-potok/Reka-So%C4%8Da.htm?reka_potok=12278&lng=2). Here, numerouswater sports (http://www.slovenia.info/?aktivne_pocitnice=0&srch=1&srchtype=spc&wp_id=_wp_1279_0_57_2_0_14&searchKrajName_wp_1279_0_57_2_0_14=&searchStr_wp_1279_0_57_2_0_14=&searchCategoryId_wp_1279_0_57_2_0_14=1914) are available, from kayaking and canoeing to rafting and canyoning. The Class 3-4 Soča River allows you to experience challenging rapids and some of Europe’s most breathtaking scenery. This river rafting was another highlight - the scenery is spectacular! Slightly further to the south of the river Soča lie Tolmin and Most na Soči (http://www.slovenia.info/en/-ctg-kraji/Most-na-So%C4%8Di.htm?_ctg_kraji=2697&lng=2). In the latter of these two towns archaeologists have discovered Iron Age graves, making it one of the more important prehistoric sites in Europe. Finally, we make our way south to the coast and to the town of Portoroz. This scenic town is just a few kilometers away from the Italian town of Trieste (which we fly in and out of) and also right next door to Croatia. There are more than eight thousand karst caves and sinkholes (http://www.slovenia.info/?naravne_znamenitosti_jame=0&srch=1&srchtype=spc&wp_id=_wp_951_0_57_2_0_14&searchKrajName_wp_951_0_57_2_0_14=&searchStr_wp_951_0_57_2_0_14=&searchCategoryId_wp_951_0_57_2_0_14=1485) in Slovenia, and twenty of these treasuries of limestone masterpieces created by disappearing karst rivers have been adapted and opened for tourists. Here the towns of Piran (http://www.slovenia.info/?_ctg_kraji=2651), Izola (http://www.slovenia.info/?_ctg_kraji=2783), and Koper (http://www.slovenia.info/?_ctg_kraji=2579) draw visitors with their medieval cores, while Portorož (http://www.slovenia.info/?_ctg_kraji=2653), though mentioned as early as 1251, offers numerous modern hotels with congress halls, a fully equipped marina, a sport airport, thermal baths, a casino, and a varied offer of summer cultural, entertainment, and sport events. Not far from the coast, the beauties of Slovene Istria with its picturesque villages await for you. Behind the Slovene coast is the Karst region (http://www.slovenia.info/en/Turisti%C4%8Dne-destinacije/Kras.htm?destinacije=187&lng=2). In the cellars of the stone houses excellent wines are poured and sold. This gourmet paradise is also a heaven for lovers of the beauties of the karst underworld. The Skocjan Caves (http://www.slovenia.info/?naravni_parki=3899), which are on UNESCO's list of natural and cultural world heritage sites, boast the 1400-meter long and 150-meter deep underground canyon of the Reka River. So we'll definitely be setting up optional tours to visit the caves but you will also enjoy some free time in this area too to visit either Italy or Croatia or just stroll along the Mediterranean coastline. All of our hotels on this trip have been chosen with care and will be certain to meet your expectations from Singles in Paradise.
