Zen

Details

We will be discussing Zen, and the subjective experiences and values associated with Zen. Zen is a subset within Buddhism originating in China believed to be heavily influenced by how Buddhism intermingled with Chinese Taoist thinking.

Much of Zen practice is focused on the nature of practice and the nature of the subjective experience through the experience of emptiness.

We will be reading three articles related to Zen:
Zen Principles
To Experience Zen-like Awakening, Try Going the Headless Way
Robert Pirsig and his Metaphysics of Quality

A few questions to ask:

  1. How well do Zen principles apply to life that you experience? What would life look like if you embraced Zen?
  2. How can Zen "headlessness" work?
  3. How does Zen tie to human improvement and flourishing?
