Join us for our first SketchUp Meetup. Beginners & experts of all ages welcome!
Details
SketchUp (http://www.sketchup.com) is a friendly and forgiving 3D modeling program that doesn’t sacrifice usability for the sake of functionality. Start by drawing lines and shapes. Push and pull surfaces to turn them into 3D forms. Stretch, copy, rotate and paint to make anything you like. SketchUp can be used to design objects to be 3D printed at the Boulder Library (see below) or to plan or design your landscaping, furniture that you want to build or your new tiny house.
SketchUp has a free version called SketchUp Make (http://www.sketchup.com/download?sketchup=make) and a professional version called SketchUp Pro (http://www.sketchup.com/products/sketchup-pro) which is licensed for commercial use by freelancers or professional architects and engineers.
Schedule:
6:00 Doors open - Pizza, soda and meeting your peers.
6:30 - 8:30 This month we will also go through a getting started tutorial or two for those unfamiliar with SketchUp then have a discussion about what SketchUp can do and who is using it.
Part of this first meetup will be discussing/brainstorming on what format for this meetup will be most useful moving forward: presentations, discussions, work-along tutorials, workshop style, or a combination of all of them. I would like to accommodate members that will range from first-timers to those using SketchUp at work as a designer, architect, or engineer, some writing extensions in Ruby, etc. … so I can envision possibly breaking up into smaller groups for part of the time, as well.
Parking:
Metered parking on the street is free after 7pm
Parking Garage across the street (under The Julian Hotel) charges for parking until around 11pm.
Library parking lots (one off of Canyon and one off of Arapahoe) offer 90 minutes free parking by entering your license plate number in the kiosk, then it is free after 7pm.
3D printing? ... according to the Boulder Public Library … items up to 10”x10”x10” can be 3D printed (https://boulderlibrary.org/bldg61/3d-printing/) there for 5 cents per gram. For reference, a nickel weighs 5 grams … something that weighs as much as a roll of quarters should cost about $10 to get printed.
Do you have something to present? Recreate a tutorial or create one of your own, show off a project or and extension that you made, talk about how you use SketchUp at work. Contact me if you would like to talk ... 5 minutes to 45 minutes ... we will need content to keep this meetup interesting. Thanks!
Please use the comments or message me with any questions or comments.
