Dr. Monisha Pasupathi is a Professor of Psychology and the Dean of the Honors College at the University of Utah. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and English Literature from Case Western Reserve University and earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University. Following her doctoral studies, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship focusing on lifespan psychology at the prestigious Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany, before joining the University of Utah faculty in 1999.
Her scholarly research operates at the intersection of narrative psychology, developmental psychology, and the cognitive science of memory. Dr. Pasupathi investigates how human beings construct their identities and make sense of their lived experiences through storytelling. A defining pillar of her empirical work is the social construction of memory—specifically, the finding that memory recall is not the static playback of a recording, but a dynamic, social act. She explores how the responsiveness and reactions of listeners actively shape the way a storyteller encodes a memory, thereby influencing emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and personal meaning-making.
Dr. Pasupathi’s lifespan approach examines these narrative mechanics across different stages of human development. She studies how individuals first construct a coherent narrative identity during adolescence, as well as how older adults process, regulate, and share their life experiences as they age.
In addition to a robust portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and her role as the co-editor of Narrative Development in Adolescence, Dr. Pasupathi is widely recognized outside of academia as the featured instructor for the acclaimed 24-lecture Great Courses series, How We Learn. She is a highly regarded educator and the recipient of multiple teaching honors, including the Outstanding Educator Award from Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.
