Join us this Sunday to hear Dr. Jason Cryan, Executive Director of the Natural History Museum of Utah, speak to us on the topic of The Thrill of Scientific Discovery:

When Charles Darwin was a young student, his driving passion was not abstract theory, but the sheer thrill of hands-on discovery—famously spending his days wading through fields collecting beetles and later exploring the tropical biodiversity of South America. Our speaker today shares that exact lineage of curiosity and field exploration. Dr. Jason Cryan is an evolutionary biologist, entomologist, and The Sarah B. George Executive Director of the Natural History Museum of Utah.

Much like Darwin’s foundational work as a naturalist, Dr. Cryan’s scientific career has centered on unraveling the evolutionary tree of life through the study of global insect diversity. His research expeditions have taken him into tropical rainforests across more than twenty countries, resulting in the discovery and description of dozens of species previously unknown to science. In addition to teaching university courses on evolutionary biology and training educators in tropical ecology, Dr. Cryan has served as Past-President of the Systematics, Evolution, and Biodiversity Section of the Entomological Society of America and currently leads the Association of Science Museum Directors. Today, he leads one of the premier natural history institutions in the American West, stewarding nearly two million specimens that document the history of life on Earth.
