Arethusa Cirque & Beyond T3/4

Details

Gary and I (Andy) both love hiking Arethusa Cirque. It's a beautiful trail with nice Alpine views, and usually Pika and Marmots. We are out for the day to enjoy the beauty of nature, not to race back to the city. We will hike at a relaxed pace.

Gary will be leading the hike, I (Andy) will be organizing the pisting and participants.

This is less common than Ptarmigan, but very interesting with a waterfall, large boulders with picas, and a hidden trail to the top.

T2- T3 Arethusa Cirque - The hike into the Little Cirque has an elevation gain of 170 metres into the first meadows and than another 250meters to the start of the the Bigger Cirque.

The first part of the hike is relatively easy as you gradually hike uphill through the forest. When you reach a large creek you continue left for more spectacular views or cross the stream for higher elevation gain(steeper climb). We may go off the main trails (OT3/4).

You must be a strong beginner or an intermediate willing to hike at a steady, relaxed pace. We will be going at a reasonable rate with a few breaks when we are doing elevation in the mountains. We will not break into groups, so everyone must hike at a similar pace. No running ahead. Please do not sign up if you are too slow for the group.

Go directly to Highwood Pass Parking lot opposite of Ptarmigan Cirque trail. Must be at Parking lot by 9:30am. From there we will drive another 7 minutes South to dirt parking lot on the east side of Kananaskis. The traffic is very busy, so you must alllow youself 2 hours to get there from City of Calgary NW limits.

If you would like to carpool, please wait until you have been accepted on the hike and then make your own arrangements in the comments or group chat.

A waiting list has automatically been created to determine this trip’s suitability for you as a potential participant. The organizers will be checking your hike history to determine your ability to complete this trip. If the organizer deems it necessary to obtain additional information from you, please provide it, otherwise, you will remain on the waiting list.

Andy Bell's German Shepherd, Jasmine, will be on this hike, on a leash at all times. She is an experienced hiker and does not chase pikas, marmots, deer or bears. She is very friendly. Unfortunately, no other dogs allowed on the hike.

Backpack must include 2 liters of water, extra socks, plastic bags in case boots get wet, first aid kit, medications, toilet kit, lunch, and layers for all weather conditions. Good hiking boots required. A positive attitude, love of nature, and sense of humour are also recommended. 🙃

Poles are bearspray are recommended.

All participants are expected to read the Slow and Steady Waiver and Code of Conduct. You must sign the waiver at the trailhead to participate.
