About us

Gidday...Kia ora, Nǐ hǎo.

Welcome to
Slow Hiking Auckland: Urban Walks & Nature Connections — we walk slowly to connect, getting some cardio and chat, and new friends on each event most weekends..Saturday or Sunday . And mid week..sometimes ...and socializing is an important part of Slow Hiking Auckland .we leave all that fast paced..massive hill climbing challenges to other Meet Up Groups.

This is a different walking group you have discovered here...with a focus on building relationship...to the land..we walk on. ..it's not about how far. Or how fast.
This is about slowing down — to see, listen, learn, and appreciate the beautiful world right under our feet....and still have weekend adventures together..be that in Auckland's Waitakere Ranges or something similar...

I've spent a lifetime of exploring hundreds of tracks and trails in Auckland and throughout the North Shore, Waikato and other places in the North and South Island...however Auckland is my home. After a season or two of loss and change, I've come back to walking with a fresh vision: slow, humble fellowship outdoors.
My takeaway is simple - life is a mystery to be lived, and a daring adventure, not held tight, not seeking what's missing, but to be grateful for the present - and beauty unfolds when we walk or even talk..slowly enough to see it, smell and hear it ..and even taste it..

🌏 Everyone Belongs Outdoors
We especially welcome international students, new Aucklanders, visitors, and ...any shape or ability...doesn't matter if you’re new to walking or hiking... or as we used to call it...tramping here in Auckland and Beyond..everyone is welcome..all paces and ability.

Learn something about local history, native trees, plants, birdlife and stories of this land as we walk feet first.

Learning English? Gentle, warm English conversation is perfect place here — on Slow Hiking Auckland no pressure, no tests, just friendly practice together if you want.

Cultural exchange — you share your world, we share ours.

Making real friends when everything feels new or different.
Visitors welcome — come see the real Auckland, slowly.

🌿 What our walks and hikes are like -

✅ Slow, unhurried pace — we stop often to look, photograph, and breathe

✅ Short & accessible — mostly under 10km, flat or easy gradients

✅ Nature & history shared — trees, birds, volcanoes, local heritage
✅ Kind, quiet company — chatting is great, silence is okay too
✅ No one left behind — we start together, finish together
✅ Summer: coasts, islands, hidden tracks , bays, bush and volcanic cones. Winter: hot pools, night walks, waterfalls, and a coffee or lunch together.

We mostly hike weekends around Auckland, with some weekday urban nature walks. A few times a year we head further — especially when petrol costs are lower...Waikato, Karangahake Gorge, Sanctuary Mountain, Tawharanui Regional Park for kiwi calls...and maybe camping opportunities together.

About your host

Piha Beach, Kitekite Falls - Waitakere Ranges

Piha Beach, Kitekite Falls - Waitakere Ranges

Piha Domain Carpark, 12 Seaview Rd, Piha Beach, Auckland, NZ

Spring is perfect for a visit to Piha Beach famous for the Black Sand Beach and Lion Rock...and also inland is Kitekite Waterfalls...Big Kauri Trees and filled with birds, history...and more ...all alongside a stream. .inside the Waitakere Ranges makes this Slow Hiking Nature Discovery adventure truly amazing...especially if you like learning something about our Native trees...I will bring some helpful books and handouts.

Beginning in front of Lion Rock we will walk along the black sand beach to South Piha. Then through the beach house areas here before walking to the Kitekite Waterfalls.

Mostly flat beach walking to begin with, and footpath walking to reach the start of the Falls track..Here's there's some 150 plus stairs to walk slowly to see the 3 tier Kitekite Waterfalls..then we return via the recently reopened loop track..back to where we started in the Piha Domain Carpark .

Walking Time : Approx 3 hours
Distance : About 6km

Graded 2 on our 1- 5 difficulty rating. You can decide to do a shorter walk if you want.

We will stop lots to pause and chat about the history here..and maybe meet a few locals I know here at Piha Beach.

Fabulous photo opportunities all day.

Led by Me, I will be wearing my orange Fluro Top for you to find us at the Carpark. Click on the Map here to allow Google to connect you to Piha.

Here's the plan: -

10.30am - Meet Piha Domain Carpark in front of Lion Rock.

3pm - Approx finished time.

Event Walking Cost - $2 Gold Coin on the day please for the website.

Bring along everything you need to keep yourself happy, fed and hydrated and warm. Wear warm thermal layers..its not summer yet..Sturdy footwear with good grip will suffice. A hat, rainjacket is useful as this is Auckland and the weather conditions change fast.
Carry everything in a small backpack to keep your hands free.

Carpooling/ Transportation - Please comment when you RSVP whether you need a lift/ride/ can offer lifts..space in your car for another member, and which part of Auckland and your mobile number. It's up to you to add these details in the Comments section below..and arrange this amongst yourselves..I will assist where possible if you message me. Bring $20 cash for your driver or make arrangements to pay them direct to their bank account. There are no public buses to get to Piha, and driving each way takes an hour Approx from the CBD .

Be sure you come prepared for stopping lots, if you are cold on the day, carrying extra clothes in your backpack is helpful, especially as the west coast at Piha is often colder than Auckland City.
