Smith Mountain Lake Walking (Hiking) Club (AVA)

See Smith Mountain Lake State Park - the Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains! Park website is: https://tinyurl.com/yc4fz2n3. Trail featured is 5 km (3 miles) or 10 km (6 miles) and has elevation gain from the shore to the ridge line (200 feet). Wear sturdy shoes and if needed bring walking sticks because the trails are rough gravel with tree roots and rocks.

Dogs and children are welcome but children under 18 must have a guardian present. Pay park entrance fee of $7 at gate entrance building or the Visitor's Center, then drive to the Discovery Center, which is at the end of Interpretive Trail Road.. Look for Ron standing or sitting at a picnic table on the left side of the Discovery Center. Afterwards we will have a drink or lunch at Alessandro's Pizza and Grill on White House Road. Walk 5 km in Booker T. Washington National Monument thru hay fields and along heavily wooded paths that follow a creek. See the reconstructed cabin, farm and tobacco barn and eventually return to the visitor's center. Afterwards, we can have a drink nearby. There is a tick advisory, so cover up and use DEET or other insect repellent

It is free to enter and park. As you drive in, look for the picnic table on the left and park near there. DO NOT ENTER THE BUILDING. Meet walk host Ron Jones at the picnic table by 1:45 pm to register so we can leave at 2 pm. Walk cost is $4 to defray admin expenses and for AVA walk credit (correct change appreciated or Zelle). Walk / Hike the Lovely Valley Trail at Smith Farm. See picture above for the Lovely Valley Loop Trail Parking Lot.
To cover 5 km, we will walk a short portion of the trail twice. When walking the trail one fall, I saw two wild turkeys! The trail winds thru woods and down to two bridges over the creek. It has a little over 200 feet of elevation gain.
