About us

"So Shiok" is a local colloquial term in Malaysia / Singapore to describe a satisfying or exciting food experience, characterized by a sense of deliciousness. Both countries' cuisines share a common cultural heritage shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian, and other regional influences from Thailand and Indonesia. The dishes are characterized by bold, spicy, and aromatic flavors through the use of various spices.

Our goal is to catch up with fellow foodies (new and seasoned) of Malaysian/Singaporean food (some may not be easily available here). Communal dining is our practice in Malaysia/Singapore whereby we share meals with our family and friends, fostering social bonding, cultural expression, and a sense of community.

There will be no fixed menu for each meetup event, but a proposed menu will be shared, which any interested member may attend. Members may propose other items that they would like in future meetups.

Look forward to meeting you.

So Shiok, 737 Sukhumvit 22, Khlong Toei, Bangkok, TH

The Hakka ("guest families") are known for multiple migrations southward from China with significant diaspora in Singapore and Malaysia. Hakka cuisine is known for their savory and hearty flavors, using preserved meats and ingredients.

We’re pleased to bring you our favourite iconic Hakka Classics dishes for Saturday 30th May Meetup lunch.

Hakka Abacus Seed / Suan Pan Zi
Abacus seeds are named after their resemblance to the seeds on a traditional abacus. These dimpled, disc-shaped dumplings are made with taro and tapioca flour. The dumplings are boiled then stir-fried with ingredients like minced meat, Chinese and wood ear mushrooms, dried shrimps and dried cuttlefish. These soft and smooth textured abacus seeds are very rarely served at restaurants nowadays as most are homemade.

Thunder Tea Rice (Lei Cha)
Our Thunder Tea Rice Set consists of steamed rice served with an assortment of 8 types of vegetables such as long beans, cabbage, kai lan, etc as well as toasted nuts and other protein sources such as tofu, and anchovies - all yummilicious goodness. This dish's highlight is our green tea soup mix or “thunder tea” poured over the rice and ingredients.

Zhar Yoke
Marinated pork belly is marinated in a mixture of red fermented bean curd, five-spice powder, and other seasonings and then double-fried*.* Crispy and super tasty on the outside and tender and moist inside, this well-loved Hakka Zhar Yoke delicacy is so deliciously addictive.
A good meat pairing to go with the Thunder Tea Rice.

The price per pax is ฿350 for this hearty meal.
