ONLINE: "Emile Durkheim: Society, Morality, Change" (Part 2)

Details

This is the Saturday afternoon meeting for Socrates Cafe. It's online. We meet every 2 weeks on Saturday.

This is part 2 in our series on the French sociologist, Emile Durkheim. He is noted as one of the founders of modern sociology. In our review of his life and ideas, we will discuss how a person's social surroundings affects a person's reality. Also, the IEP adds "Another vital role that society plays in the construction of human knowledge is the fact that it actively organizes objects of experience into a coherent classificatory system that encompasses the entire universe." Our discussion will also include the classification of knowledge, cultural relativism, and social change. We have much to discuss, so this meeting will have 2 parts (8-27 and 9-10).

MEETING FORMAT

The meeting starts with a dialogue (about 15 minutes, recorded), and then an open discussion will follow (not recorded). You don't need to read any materials in advance.

READING MATERIAL

This meeting has no prerequisites; reading in advance is optional.
