Architects are changing how they design spaces to create positive social impacts. This raises some important questions. For example, how do these new approaches affect the way architects think about their work, their research methods, and how they collaborate with others? These questions are especially important when we consider big challenges like inequality, climate change, and political division.
This symposium will explore how architects can address these issues. We'll discuss how architects can collaborate with transdisciplinary experts to better understand the communities they're designing with, and consider the values that guide their work.
Agenda
Welcome and Registration: 9:00–9:15 am
Opening Remarks: 9:15–9:30 am
Morning Panel Discussion: 9:30 am–12:00
Morning Panel Discussion:
Topic 1: Ethical Foundations for Practice - 9:30 am–10:45 pm
The "Ethical Foundations for Practice" theme delves into the crucial intersection of ethics within architecture, focusing on the implications of AI, data biases, and design ownership in relation to societal and environmental duties. It features speakers from various backgrounds, shedding light on the integration of ethical standards into everyday practice and the significance of ethical deliberation. Through engaging discussions and reflective exercises, participants will enhance their grasp of ethical frameworks crucial for designing spaces that embody social values and uphold scientific integrity. This theme underscores the pivotal role of ethics in fostering beneficial outcomes for communities and the environment.
Values Activity 30 Mins
Topic 2: Process and Methods for a Values-based Practice - 10:45 am –12:00 pm
The "Process and Method" theme delivers a set of tools and frameworks aimed at a values-driven approach to architecture, blending speculative and analytical strategies. It introduces participants to enhancing design via participatory engagement, deeply interpreting design politics, and employing speculative fiction for visionary decision-making. The program includes panels and provocations that foster rich conversations and activities, emphasizing the role of self-awareness and positioning in practice through gap analysis and comparative studies. This theme is a thorough journey into merging theory with practice for crafting innovative and meaningful architectural outcomes.
Lunch Break and Networking: 12:00–1:00 pm
Afternoon Panel Discussion:
Topic 3: The new models of interpretation - 1:00-2:00 pm
The "New Models of Interpretation" theme explores the conversion of abstract data into concrete design solutions, emphasizing the application of theoretical ideas through practical exercises, resource sharing, and fostering community ties. Participants engage in a "choose your own adventure" exercise to discover new methods for utilizing data, identifying gaps in their projects, and connecting research with practice. Discussions will cover the use of data in designing intelligent buildings, finding essential data for resolving design queries, and improving projects via interdisciplinary cooperation. This theme highlights the importance of transforming engagement data into actionable design strategies, encouraging a profound investigation into the ways data shapes and enhances architectural practice.
Fireside Chat: 2:00-3:30 pm
The closing keynote transitions into a reflective dialogue, engaging participants in a thoughtful examination of the day's insights and future architectural possibilities. It serves as a platform for envisioning the impact of emerging trends and technologies on the architectural landscape. This conversation aims to inspire participants with a forward-thinking mindset, emphasizing the significance of innovation and sustainability in shaping tomorrow's built environments.
