In November, we will be discussing the book, The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.

This is a raw, unflinching account of a sudden and shattering loss, written by one of America's most precise and luminous essayists. A memoir on grief and survival, it is a masterwork that explores the first year after her husband's unexpected death. Deeply personal, yet universal, it is an unforgettable chronicle of pain, resilience, and memory.

The Story

Several days before Christmas 2003, John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion saw their only daughter, Quintana, fall ill with what seemed at first flu, then pneumonia, then complete septic shock.

She was put into an induced coma and placed on life support. Days later―the night before New Year’s Eve―the Dunnes were just sitting down to dinner after visiting the hospital when John Gregory Dunne suffered a massive and fatal coronary. In a second, this close, symbiotic partnership of forty years was over. Four weeks later, their daughter pulled through.

Two months after that, arriving at LAX, she collapsed and underwent six hours of brain surgery at UCLA Medical Center to relieve a massive hematoma.

It is an intimate, stunningly honest memoir that chronicles a season of loss, memory, and profound grief as Didion navigates the new, desolate landscape of her life.

Powerful, moving, and exceptionally well-crafted, it is a universal story that speaks to anyone who has ever loved and lost, exploring what Didion calls "magical thinking"—the private rituals and irrational hopes that emerge in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

This portrait of a marriage and of a life, in good times and in bad, will change the way you look at love and death.
