Our first general meetup was charming. This new episode actually has a theme prompt for discussion which should help to define the atmosphere. So viola:
Outrage! What elements of our collective world are loathsome and how did things get this way? We know ancient societies considered bondage a normal human plight. Slave markets were famous in our ‘civilized’ world up until the mid-1800’s even in the United States. Servitude continues underground to this day. Human trafficking is alive and well even in California right now! Other countries shamelessly recruit ‘nannies’ and ‘laborers’ who are held against their will. These people are blatantly lured into this bondage. Is this outrageous?
What about the assault on our democracy- are we being subjugated from within? Is the world turning into some version of an overt oligarchy where the biggest ‘pay-to-play’ actors control the governance? And what of the oligarchs? Do the Sacklers get to 'buy' their way out of culpability for the opiod crisis and keep a lions share of their ill gotten gain? That's exactly what happened. Should uber rich people be taking ‘joy rides’ into space as pretend astronauts while burning outrageous amounts of greenhouse gases and achieving nothing? Even worse, going to Mars is a pipe dream and if we can’t sort things out on this planet then Mars travel means nothing!
