V is for VSCodium

Did you know that VSCode (the binary) is not FLOSS? The source code is, but the binary isn't. Who knew!? Well, Tim O'Brien did. That's why he started compiling VSCodium, which is basically VSCode, but FLOSS and no tracking.

This will be a mostly peer-led session, but 5 of us peers have at least some experience, so it should have at least some of the interesting insights that come with experience.

Objectives:

  1. Install VSCodium, if you haven't already.
  2. Show and tell something you like about VS Code / VSCodium for 5 to 15 minutes:
  • some way you like to use VSCode
  • a modification you like to make
  • an add-on you like to install from the marketplace
  1. Be able to explain why VSCodium was created (hint: licensing and telemetry/tracking)

Requirements:

  1. A workstation

Venue:
This is a hybrid in-person and online event. When you register, you'll be asked whether you're planning to participate in-person or online. We need to know so we can plan seats and snacks.
We use Big Blue Button for our online classroom. If you're participating online, meet us at bbb.sofree.us.
Doors open at 5PM. Instructors will be in the room early to help students with requirements.
The rally track for this event is The Code by Alan Lee Silva. It will play for the three minutes before class starts. Class will start on time.
