Must be single, politically progressive or liberal, (most often a Democratic voter,) open-minded and of a certain age (IYKYK ... but around 50+ or older would fit the purpose of this group.) Let’s get together socially, knowing we share similar aspirations for our communities and our country!

Kansas City PBS host Nick Haines will be joined by Mayor Quinton Lucas, Congressional Representative Emanuel Cleaver II, and KC Planning Mgr Selina Zapata Bur for a discussion of the history of Bruce R. Watkins Dr (Hwy 71) and recent efforts to reimagine the corridor in a way that that reconnects communities and makes it safer for East Side residents.
Reconnecting the East Side, a multi-organization initiative focused on reimagining US 71 along the Bruce R. Watkins Dr corridor, began 3 years ago.
https://reconnecteastside.com/In 1951, city planners approved a freeway plan connecting U.S. Highway 71 to downtown Kansas City, cutting a path through predominantly Black East Side neighborhoods. Despite opposition from residents, demolition began in the late 1960s.
https://www.kcur.org/history/2025-04-30/highway-71-bruce-r-watkins-drive-kansas-city-historyThe Drive is now one of the most dangerous roads in Missouri. Businesses along Prospect Avenue saw little benefit, and neighborhoods remained divided by a road that still looks and feels like a freeway.
This program complements the Central Library exhibition Detoured: The Making of Bruce R. Watkins Drive.
(I will be rushing from this program to the Linda Hall Library, so no dinner after)
