National Book Award winner Imani Perry discusses her new essay collection, Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People, examining the close historical, musical, and artistic connections between being Black and the color blue. Perry uses the color, identified as the world’s favorite, for her broader historical and current-day examination of race; she juxtaposes the hope for a better life that seems to be offered by a blue sky and blue water against the deep heartache and feelings of loss explored in the music we call the blues. Perry talks with Kansas City writer Natasha Ria El-Scari.

Meet at the reception (outside the auditorium) - I will have a small sign that says "Meetup Group."

We can walk over to a restaurant for a light bite after the program - the Plaza has many and there are several on Main St near the library.
