From the event FAQ:
A powwow is a Tribal celebration of community and spirituality governed by Tribal protocols used for thousands of years to carry on the way of life for Tribal peoples.
Historically, powwows were gatherings only attended by communities from which they derived. The first intertribal powwow was held in Lawrence in 1926 at the Dedication of the Haskell Stadium and first Tribal WWI Memorial. A powwow is not a form of entertainment, it is a way of life. The elements of the powwow displayed in song and dance are prayers to the Creator, honoring and celebrating spirituality and freedom, and a connection to the past, present and future. Do not refer to Native regalia as "costumes." Do not touch any regalia or ritual object. Do not take photos of individuals without their permission. Pointing with an index finger is considered impolite; indicate an individual with a nod of the head.
Drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden on powwow grounds. Violators will be removed.
