Come ice climbing with us at Peabody's! Rock climbing experience is not required.

After helping everyone get geared up, your host will give a brief primer on safety and ice climbing technique. Then we'll head to the short tower, which has the easiest routes. Your host(s) will belay unless participants can demonstrate proficiency with proper top-rope belay technique.

Required gear: You will need ice climbing boots, crampons, rock climbing helmet, and harness. All of these can be rented from Peabody's (see price list below). I have 2 sets of ice climbing tools, and I can bring 3 loaner helmets to save people a couple of bucks.

Prices

  • Day Pass $25.00
  • Boot Rental $5.00
  • Crampons Rental $5.00
  • Climbing Harness Rental $5.00
  • Ice Tools Rental $5.00
  • Helmet Rental $5.00

You will pay for your day pass and gear rental when you check in at front desk inside the red barn.

What to wear

  • Insulated pants or hiking pants + thermal underwear. Puffy pants are not recommended because they can catch on the sharp crampon points.
  • Calf-high or knee-high gaiters can be useful to keep loose pants from getting caught by crampon points.
  • Thick, warm socks.
  • Base layer, mid layer, a shell to block wind.
  • A large puffy jacket you can wear when not climbing.
  • A fleece beanie that can fit under a climbing helmet.
  • Fleece gloves to wear when climbing. You don't want thick ski gloves because they will prevent you from gripping the ice tools.
  • Mittens may be worn when you are not actively climbing.

Useful extras:

  • Safety glasses
  • Headlamp (Large flood lights are on, but still nice to have.)
  • A thermos with hot tea, cocoa, or coffee.
  • Hand warmers in your mittens or pockets.
